Dr. Davies is a registered psychologist licensed to practice in British Columbia since 1987. He is the Owner/Director of ABLE Developmental Clinic Inc., Co-Director of AIMS: Autism Integrated Medical Services at Pacific Autism Family Network, and Executive Director of the BC School and Applied Psychology Residency.
Dr. Davies maintains a busy clinical practice, supervises and trains the next generation of psychologists, and serves as a professional advisor to several organizations representing individuals with disabilities. His clinical work is primarily with children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders, including assessment, intervention, and consultation.
As a student, Dr. Davies attended SFU and UBC, attaining a PhD in Clinical and Community Psychology from UBC in 1986. He was the recipient of several academic awards including the prestigious Killam Award and a research award from the National Institute on Mental Retardation. After graduating, he joined and later became the Director of Psychology at the Variety Child Development Centre (now Centre for Child Development) in Surrey. In 1994 he founded ABLE Developmental Clinic Inc. as demand for his clinical services in private practice exceeded capacity and he invited colleagues to work with him serving children, youth, and adults with mental health challenges, including those with neurodevelopmental disorders.
In 2000, he stepped away from government service to stand with families fighting for services for their children with autism. He served as an expert witness in the Supreme Court of BC in the landmark Auton case in which Mme. Justice Allan ruled that early intensive behavioural intervention for autistic children was a medically necessary treatment and governments had an obligation to provide these services. This ruling and sustained parental advocacy led to direct funding to families for BC children with ASD and comparable programs across Canada. He was awarded the BC Psychological Association Humanitarian Commendation in 2002 for his advocacy.
Dr. Davies has served as a professional advisor to several organizations representing children with disabilities including: Autism BC, Autism Support Network, Families for Early Autism Treatment of BC, Pacific Autism Family Network, Medicare for Autism Now, Learning Disabilities Association of BC, Attention Deficit Support Association, and Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder. He has also served on many professional advisory panels including: BC Council on Autism, Registry of Autism Service Providers, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Collaboration in Autism, and Parent and Professional Plan for revising disability services. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Variety Children’s Charity.
Recognizing the lack of training opportunities for young psychologists interested in neurodevelopmental disorders, he started an internship program at ABLE in 2005. This internship grew and a consortium of UBC, Surrey School District, Compass Clinic and ABLE was formed which led to APPIC and Canadian Psychological Association accreditation in 2024. ABLE hosts the residency and Dr. Davies serves as the Executive Director, as well as a clinical supervisor for residents.
Dr. Davies has received many awards for his contributions to awareness and services for individuals with disabilities. In addition to the BCPA Humanitarian Commendation, he has received the Gary Roberts Memorial Award (Share Society), Game Changer Award (Pacific Autism Family Network), Angels for Autism Award, Nina and Manuel Pickburn Award (Autism BC), Chevalier (Sovereign Order of St. John Knights Hospitaller), and King Charles III Coronation Medal.
